Recently, the 2023 “Maritime Silk Road Starting Point, Fresh Fujian” Cultural and Tourism Promotion, as well as the Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition, was held in San Francisco, USA. The event was jointly organized by the Fujian Provincial Association for External Cultural Exchanges, the Consulate General of China in San Francisco, and the Fujian Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. Lin Xiangdong, the Director of the Fujian Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, presided over the event.

During the event, Zhang Yan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial Party Committee and Minister of the Propaganda Department, passionately introduced Fujian’s cultural and tourism resources. He briefed the guests on Fujian’s rich history, splendid culture, abundant tourism resources, and rapidly growing economy. He warmly invited friends from all walks of life to visit Fujian, experience its profound historical and cultural heritage, and appreciate its beautiful natural scenery.
Consul General Zhang Jianmin of the Consulate General of China in San Francisco stated that this promotional event would further deepen the understanding, love, and longing of the American people for Fujian. It would also promote friendly exchanges and cooperation between Fujian and California in the fields of culture and tourism.
California State Treasurer Fiona Ma expressed that with the resumption of direct flights between California and major cities in China, the bonds between the U.S. and China would continue to strengthen. She looks forward to further exchanges in the fields of culture, tourism, and the economy.

At the event, a captivating performance of the Zhangzhou rod puppet show titled “Fu Puppet Presents Auspiciousness” and the song “Fujian, You Are Like You” unfolded, leaving the attending guests in awe. The first American to hold a permanent resident identity card of the People’s Republic of China and Xiamen University professor, Pan Weilian, shared his unique insights into “Fu” culture through a video presentation. Cindy, a volunteer for Wuyi Tea in California, shared her Fujian tea story, complemented by an on-site Fujian tea art performance, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the profound and extensive culture of Chinese tea.

It is reported that the event also featured a Fujian Intangible Cultural Heritage interactive area, a cultural and tourism photo exhibition, a tea art experience area, and a gourmet tasting area. These attractions drew the attention of numerous Americans who had the opportunity to view images showcasing Fujian’s cultural and natural heritage, including intangible cultural heritage projects. Attendees also had the chance to taste Fujian’s distinctive cuisine, such as Fuzhou fish balls, and experience Fujian’s intangible cultural heritage, including the Zhangzhou rod puppet show, Zherong paper cutting, and woodblock New Year prints. The event provided a comprehensive experience for participants to fully appreciate the unique charm of “The Maritime Silk Road Starting Point, Fresh Fujian.”
